In response to a subscriber’s request, I wrote an article about the “No original pages detected” message found in the Google Search Console URL Inspection report .What to do when faced with the message
So I figured I could go ahead and go to GSC’s URL Inspection tool and look at the other fields, including the Sitemaps field. This usually contains the URL of your website’s sitemap , but in some cases it may contain the phrase “No referring sitemaps detected.”
So this is the “problem” that I will address in this article.
Where can I find information about a page’s referring sitemap?
The message “No referring sitemap detected” is therefore in Google Search Console, in the inspection report of a page. To find it, it’s very simple:
Go to Search Console;
Enter a URL in the bar at the top and start the inspection;
Open the “Page Indexing” report.

Once the page indexing report is open, go to the first section called “Discovery” and you will find two fields:

In the sitemaps field, you will either find the URL of the referring sitemap or the error message “No referring sitemap detected”.

Note in the above case that the referring sitemap is the sitemap index.
Does the “No referring sitemap detected” status impact a page’s SEO?
That is to say, there are situations where it’s absolutely not problematic, and others where it can be.
We need to go back to basics: what is a sitemap?
There are in fact several types of format which are available in several formats elsewhere (XML, RSS, ATOM, mRSS).
It is therefore a sort of inventory (sometimes à la Prévert) of the indexable contents that you wish to see indexed.
A sitemap is not mandatory at all contrary to what you read everywhere on the internet.

However, an XML (or RSS) sitemap remains a tool that facilitates the discovery of the pages of a website. This is also why it is especially useful for large sites. But even if your site has 50 pages, why deprive yourself of having a sitemap ?
So, no, a sitemap is not mandatory and the presence of a sitemap will not necessarily allow the indexing of your pages. There are many other parameters to take into account such as the content. But it is true however that a sitemap is supposed to facilitate the discovery and exploration of your URLs.
Note the difference between crawling – Google crawls your URL – and indexing – Google adds your URL to its search results. I also discussed the problem of content crawled but not indexed by Google in this article .
Now let’s move on to the next two situations.
It’s not uncommon for me to see this message up to 6 months after the content has been indexed.
So if your page is indexed and has proper internal linking, you can ignore this error message.
This is a situation that generally occurs in two cases:
Case #1: New URL discovered outside sitemap
Using the New URL Submission Tool:
It’s basic, but you just publish a new 2024 verified store article or a new e-commerce product sheet and then you request indexing using Google Search Console.
A few minutes or even hours later, you run the URL through the inspection tool which tells you that the page is indexed but you still get the message “No referring sitemap detected”.
I remind you that when you request a page indexing via the Search Console, it is the URL that is crawled . It does not send a request for the exploration of the sitemap.

You may also have the situation where you have not submitted the new URL for indexing, but Google simply discovers it by crawling
To get back to our sheep, I have been in SEO for a few years. And I think that not a month goes by without me seeing an article titled “SEO is dead”, then stating a “new” marketing lever that is in fact just an old one but paraphrased with newspeak.

ChatGPT is able to call upon all its knowledge to formulate an answer to a question.
